How to Book a String Quartet: Ceremony, Drinks & Dinner

Book a string quartet by confirming the three moments they cover (ceremony, drinks, dinner), agreeing repertoire (classical, pop arrangements, or both), and locking a signed contract with a 25% deposit. UK quartets typically cost £900–£2,200 for a wedding day.

The three-moment wedding pattern

  • Ceremony: 15 minutes of pre-processional, processional, signing, recessional
  • Drinks reception: 45–60 minutes of ambient repertoire
  • Dinner: often replaced by a jazz band or playlist — check before adding

Classical, pop arrangements or both?

Modern quartets carry 200+ arrangements: Pachelbel to Coldplay, Bach to Beyoncé. Ask for a repertoire list and a live video of a pop arrangement — not every classically-trained quartet plays pop well.

Amplification and outdoor events

For rooms over 80 guests or any outdoor performance, ask whether the quartet brings amplification (small PA plus clip-on mics). Unamplified strings disappear outside.

Fees (UK)

  • Solo violinist / harpist: £350–£700
  • String duo: £600–£1,000
  • String trio: £750–£1,400
  • String quartet: £900–£2,200
"A good quartet doesn't just play — they cue the processional to the exact second the doors open. That timing is what you're paying for."

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do string quartets play modern songs?
Most contemporary quartets carry hundreds of pop, film and rock arrangements alongside classical repertoire.
How much space do they need?
3m × 2m is comfortable for four players and instrument cases. Confirm no direct sunlight — heat warps wood instruments.
Can they play outside?
Yes — with a gazebo or covered area, no direct sun, and amplification for anything beyond 30 guests.
What's included in the fee?
Usually up to 2 hours of playing (ceremony + drinks), setup, breakdown and travel within a set radius.
How far in advance should I book?
Peak season (May–September) books 6–12 months ahead. Winter weekdays are often available at 4–6 weeks.
